Sticky fluid was created by Andyp62
Hi
I have been using my KZ for the past month without any problems but recently the throttle is not returning properly and tick over is very erratic, on taking them apart I found the bores are contaminated with a thick substance almost like tar, I have only ever used E5 petrol (in the U.K.) so was wondering if anyone else has come across this before?.
It is a 1978 KZ650 B2 import from the USA.
thanks

Well it is the colour that ethanol fuel goes when as it evaporates but to leave that amount of shite it would need to have been E55 not E5.
It can only be fuel related, either the fuel itself or maybe shite from the tank. Are you using an ethanol treatment?
Is the tank lined? Maybe breaking down.?
Was it sprayed internally with fogging oil or some other substance whilst laid up?
Just ideas as never come across anything that bad.

To me they look more like they have been sitting for some time with fuel in them.  Not like there were running.

That goo is what remains when all the good stuff has evaporated out of ethanol fuel.
There's a chance that the petrol stations E5 pumps actually contain E10 and they are pocketing the difference.

Looks like a very poor cleaning job. It's a wonder it ran at all.

No kidding.  Those are some seriously dirty carbs.  They need a full teardown, and soaking in carb dip.  Spraying them down while ganged together is a fool's errand.  Plus, all new O-rings...and get rid of the multiple bowl gaskets.

BTW, regular, non ethanol gasoline, gets grungy just the same.

The tank isn’t lined it is in very good condition, I haven’t tried ethanol treatment but I will do, I was thinking the petrol is contaminated with something, what would be the best thing to use to wash out the tank to remove any residue ?

The marine version stays active for twice the time period. I have bikes that don't get used some years but they fire right up without issue when I do use them.

The cross-point screws holding the carbs to the joining plate are completely butchered.  How did you get them out?

And for what it's worth, a Vessel #3 Impacta is my go-to tool to remove those screws.

I think looking at the length of the float bowl screws there is a PO or two that have been "less than sympathetic"
