KZ650 converted to electronic fault was created by MauserXR
As topic I purchased a new cam 1016 to replace the stock cam along with the later KZ650 pickup plate and ignitor....new coils and plugs etc bike starts and ran great till about 6k...then as if she was losing power / running out of fuel she wouldn't pull past this point ?
Came home and pulled the electronic off and dropped on the old points and no problems even with literally just dropping the points plate on and setting in the middle of the timing adjustment slots?
I am so gutted that she's not sorted....but cannot see why she's playing up?
Please can anyone shed any light on what the problem could be ?

Sounds like it's an advancer issue.
Maybe the electronic ignition plate is impeding the mechanical advancer weights or maybe the ignitor has a built in advancer and your getting double advance from both the mechanical and electronic advance mechanisms.

Thanks for the reply I’ve been advised I might need 3 ohm coils rather than the stock 4 ohm ? Guy I purchased the parts from said he used the setup with Dynacoils ?

If the advancer unit was dissabled for lubing, it could be 180° off the crank/cam OT timing by due to wrong assambling.
Your advancer springs are looking over streched also.......

What is the number on the old ignition advance?

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Part number on the points cam is 202
i took the part number required for the electronic version from the forum on here.
Spring is fine and operates smoothly it’s tension  is comparable with the original.

I am late to the topic and not sure I will be of help. As I understand it the part number 1016 is stock for the 550s not the 650s It would appear the part number for the 650s is 1022. Not saying this is cause of issue, but in an attempt to learn something is there a reason you chose the unit you did? I do not know it without looking it up but would think there are differences between the advance curve between the 2 engines. But what do I know?

That's exactly why I asked what the number was.  I'm not sure, but I think the number defines the advance curve...10 degrees at idle and xx degrees when fully advanced at around 3500 rpm.  My Z1B is 10 at idle and 40 when fully advanced.  I suspect this engine is firing too late and isn't developing full compressive force.

I have a couple of 650 ignition advancers but they are in my shop, not easily examined.  But I will look tomorrow.

That is just part number info.  As suggested more info on what components you are attempting to use might aid in finding potential solution(s).

Thanks guys since the sites forum was rebuilt recently the links to the posts online don’t work. I appreciate there is a search button on here but I just googled KZ650 electronic ignition and up popped a link straight to the post on here.
Anyway it showed using the 1016 advancer unit. If you search for the 1 posted here is shows the points version.
The seller of the pick-up coils and IC module has confirmed they were tested and on a 650, sadly he didn’t have the cam for sale.
Yes with the points plate back on she rev’d past 6k I’ve ordered some 3 ohm coils from Amazon which I can return if they make no difference.
Happy Christmas guys and thanks for the help
PS IC shown attached with my homemade brackets.
