Been quite a while since I've posted, I'm working on my 78 Z1R this winter. I'm having trouble finding a suitable windscreen for it. It has the original on it yet but it has a crack that has been glued. I'm looking for a replacement that has the same color tint and thickness, doesn't need to be NOS or OEM, just want it to look "right". I saw an OEM takeoff on E-Bay for $500, that's more than I'll spend even if it's perfect. Anybody know of someone making-selling a new replacement?

Thanks guys, is the color right (or at least close), do you remember what color you ordered? How about the thickness of the plastic so the outer rubber (around the back) fits correctly.

Zero Gravity sells a decent replacement, tint is a hair darker. I bought a couple seconds off their eBay store a few years ago......I could not figure out what the blems were.

Thanks Leon, that is cheap enough to give it a try, and the color looks in the neighborhood, I'm a little nervous about the shipping time from Japan. Maybe I'm a worry wart....

Anyone have experience with Redline Cycle www.redlinecycle.com/Z1R%20Windshield.html ?

This is mentioned on the Redline page linked above, but I wanted to say that I've never been able to find an aftermarket Z1R windshield that has the holes drilled for the factory rubber edge trim. I believe some of them come with push-on ("U" shaped) edge trim, but the factory trim has rubber nipples that hold it in place, and in order to mount the original trim you'd need to drill holes to match.

I've contemplated what it would take to drill a replacement, but I've never actually tried it. I know drilling polycarbonate can be a pain, but they do make special drill bits. And if the replacement is very close in shape to the original, you might be able to use the original as a drill guide to get the spacing correct... Maybe?

Maybe I'll try someday.

Jim at Redline Cycle is a great guy. I always get the right parts and he is willing to take time to talk to you about what and why your doing what you are so he can suggest the best part for the job.

I've drilled other projects...with varying success, I've toyed with the idea of making my own windshield using Lexan instead of polycarbonate if I can find some with the right tint. I do want to put the stock rubber trim on whatever I end up with.

Lexan is just the GE trade name polycarbonate. Kind of like Teflon is Dow Chemical’s trade name for PTFE.
