so what do you think will appreciate more? a stock Z1R or Turbo Z1R? reason i ask is cause i know where a fairly stock and good shape 78' Turbo Z1R that i could get for about 3500 or so. not that i want a Z1R but if it could be a money maker i would think about it.

this was on ebay a while back about around springtime, the person who won it whent to pick it up and found out that the engine did'nt turn over, the tank was severly rusted on the inside and that there was a chip off of the head on the right side, look at the front fin next to the plug, they posted a thread here on his find. ;)

said something about there being an issue with the title and that it may be stolen.

I visited with this guy in Montreal a couple of months ago.....he is the one who sold me my Z1R. He is a super nice guy and the bike you see on ebay is outstanding. Its a complete restoration from the frame up.....he was VERY particular to get every detail perfect.
I hope mine looks as good as his by the spring....

Because of the number of them made,(around 500) you would think the turbo, but there is no way that I know of to verify that it was sold new as a Z1R turbo so it could be a regular Z1R with the turbo parts installed. If that is indeed the case, the Z1R will be very nearly (or possibly more) valuble than the turbo bike as it can be verified what it was new. (D code) I'd think for $3500 it would almost be worth it for the kick in the pants when the turbo spooled up the first few times!!:woohoo:  :P

how can you tell if it is an original turbo, or a dolled up Z1R?

Run the vin thru a dealer...they have a fische (well it's on computer now) that tells them what vin is what bike. They have the same program for the engine case numbers.

At $3500 you're in the money right now. If I had the spare change it'd be in my garage for 35. The turbos are already worth more and there were far fewer. I have a link to a web-site around here somewhere that gives all the scoop-age about the Z1R-TCs...if I find it I'll re-post. We had a computer crash at the beginning of summer and I have to find a 'back up' disc that has all that info on it.
But anyhow, way fewer turbos and they bring way more. If the thing has the (what'd they call it?) black-molly paint that'd be a clue that it's likely a real-deal. Like I said, if I had 35, it'd be in Kansas...Dorothy. ;)

I agree with the statement that the Z1R is like one of the big Mopar Hemis, but I would say it would be more like the Charger Daytona or the Plymouth Superbirds.

I have a picture (somewhere) of a Detroit parking lot filled with unsold wing cars as they were too unusual for the general public. Chryco needed to sell around 500 of the cars each year to homologate the sister cars for NASCAR racing. Today these things can go for north of $300,000 or more.

The Z1R, like the winged warriors was a poor seller because the style was rather radical and had a love it or hate it reaction from buyers. The lousy sales convinced Kawasaki to put turbos on the bikes to decimate the other big bikes hoping the extra power would help move the bike from dealer's floors.

In my opinion, the black Z1R with the orange and yellow striping is a work of art and like all classic artwork, they will eventually have a rocket ship ride on valuations. I don't think they will ever reach the nosebleed prices of early year Z1's but today's prices will look like a steal within a few years. The normally aspirated Silver Z1R's will trail behind the Turbos but they will also rise.

Think of what happened to the 750H2 triples in the past few years. There aren't a lot of them left because they were so hard to handle, I would bet that the Z1R turbo also had a high attrition rate and they less of them there are, the more valuable the survivors become.

does anyone know where to go to figure out the production #'s an the 1980 model black z1r's?according to zedder and the frame #'s listed there were 17392 1978 kz1000-d1 z1r's produced.and also according to zedder and the frame #'s,there were only 3308 1980kz1000-d3 z1r's produced.i looked this up before and just double checked because a buddy of mine has a 1978 z1r that we think might have been a turbo bike.another buddy said that they were the "rare" one,at which point i said i've seen more turbo z1r's than black 1980 models.so i checked zedder and came away thinking that there were less 1980 models built.anyone care to shed some light on which they made the least of?just curious not trying to get anyone flamin here.
