Boy I've been working on these things since 78 and you guys even confused me. Why don't we just ask the poor guy the SN of the engine and let him know that way.

Lazyman ,go to
www.zedder.com
with your engine & vin number and click on bike info. The bikes are arranged by model & year by cc. Very easy to use.
Larry, thanks for the additional info. on MKll cases ,all 3 sets I own have the double rib under the clutch and I'd never noticed that before! Good to know when searching for Mkll cases. As Jeff posted,Canadian & European MKll's( A3 ) didn't get the EPA smog heads.Sold quite a few Canuck valve covers to US guys.
Just did a little checking,my G model cases have .540 main ribs to the filter housing and the A3- A3A cases are .600. Don't have a set of Z1/KZ but was told the ribs are .300 or so. The '80 G model cases have 17 ribs across the lower case 1/2 but the A3 & A3A have 13. The A3 cases have a Z1 style tranny door and the A3A & G have the J style as shown in your pic above.
Recently learned the '79 LTD didn't have MKll cases or crank but did have the covers and cylinder head.

Here's a 77 motor. Notice less ribs on the front of the cases.
With the age of these motors and mods being so commonly done, it's never safe to assume anything. Cases are easy to spot the differences but what's inside you can't be sure of unless you count either the crank teet [difficult] or the camsprocket teet[easy].
I have MKII, KZ and J cases all sitting in the attic at the shop. I also have KZ, J and late model GPz11 heads. I'm going to get a bunch more photos and post them on my site so it's easier for guys to figure out what they have.

MKII rear view. Trans cover, bottom corner & the rib behind the oil fill tower extends on down to the top of the engine case. KZ cases, the rib on the oil tower is shorter it stops before the top of the cases.

Trans cover & case shape differences. Notice the lower right corner of the trans cover. Curved on MKII.
Also if you have the trans cover off the motor, the MKII cases have 2 boss locations where the shift shaft can be installed. One for Shaft Drive, the other for Chain Drive.
