ok, I'm getting a little over 15 volts @ 4000 rpm, should be good right? Not really sure what was wrong, cleaned all my connections and cleaned and adjusted the regulator. thanks for the replies!

A little over 15v on the battery is too high. It'll cook the battery. The regulator is maechanical on the 77 650. It is adjustable internally, but I would recommend a solid state replacement.

how do I need to adjust the regulator so it will give me about 14.5 volts? Do I open or close the upper or lower conntacts to reduce the voltage. I guess I was happy just to see it charge again!

Hey Zippo. I think that Cactus, a member?, former member? dunno, did a big write up on cleaning/refurbishing a regulator. It should still be in the old site archive above. You can also try to U2U him or find his email address in the old site user base. I know that his post was accompanied by a pile of pictures also. It might help.

The regulator on a 77 kz650 b1 has the same part number and swaps with:

74 400
77 400 A1
78 400 A2
75 400 D
76 400 D3
77 400 D4
75 400 S
76 400 S2
77 400 S3
77 650 C1

Hey thanks, thats where I got the idea to take it all apart and clean it. Found a solid state regulator from a guy at oregon motorcycle parts, anybody ever dealt with him? Anyway I'm giving up on the old regulator and hope this will be more dependable, at least its charging now.

Thanks

Make sure he is aware that the 77 650's are different than the other KZ 650's and different from most other KZ's.
