how to build a chopper was created by dan76kz900
Hello,

I have been looking at pictures of choppers, and I am starting to like them. I dont know how you guys build them or anything.

I'd like to play around with my 76 KZ900 and see what I can do. What I would like to do is not do any modifications that I cant return back to stock.

My ideas are starting.. I want to sit closer to the road, and have straight handle bars and be able to sit up straight. My bike has already been lowered a little bit in the front.

Any ideas for me ? What have you done to achevie a chopper style.

step away from the 900!:woohoo: if its a roached out basketcase it would be bad enough but it sounds like your bike is complete.are we talking just stripping off some extra parts or are we talking the big ax here?

NO! make a drag bike instead! ;) v twins are for choppers, not inline 4s lol
haha the best of luck with your built, chopper or not:laugh:
but to get to your question, maybe forward controls, ape hangar bars, take of shocks and put on struts that lower it, fatter tire, um... big "vetter"(?) fairing( i think they came with a radio....) ... uh... maybe get a different seat, and put a different tail light on it (short stubby cross shaped thing... basically a fat "x" rotated 45 degrees if that makes sence).... um...im out of ideas lol good luck

From the above posts you get the idea of what we feel about those who chop KZ's. Chop a CB if you feel the need. A situp position is not the most comfortable. Too much weight on backside. Weight should be supported at 3 points. Feet, hands and butt. Try doing 70-100mph on a chopper. With high bars your upperbody acts like a sail. Your arms will feel 3 inches longer after a short ride. Then again most chopper guys are knuckle draggers any hoo. Take a chopper put flatbars on and stretch swingarm and you got a dragbike.

uhh.. maybe my use of "chopper" was not the proper term.

Well, I guess I am wanting more of a relaxing sitting posistion and want to feel more low profile. Take a look at a pic of my bike..

Long rides are not too comfortable. (maybe i just need to build some abs)

Any ideas for me ? How about some sample pictures :)

Your bike already has the look that many guys here are going for. If just want some comfort then you could put some pull back bars on it and a set or foward controls. Might not look "right" but it will be more comfortable. For the seat I would buy an old ratty kz seat and then have it cut down some and then re cover it. that would get you a bit closer to the ground. I am sure you could sell your bars to someone here.

Kawtoy: thats a good idea about the seat.

I looked though the picture archives and found some bikes I like.

I like how the sitting posistion is, but i dont want a long rear like that.

Nice bike, I like the seat, its lowered, handle bars are nice, bike looks stock. What seat is that ? how is it lowered like that ? This bike looks like it'll be a nice highway rider. I like the exhaust, but would like something less, like 2-2 but not like the stock pipes.

very nice ! a little bit too long for me. I like that seat, looks the same as the previous picture. What are those bars called ?

ejshotgun: Thanks. I have put alot of work/time/money in it already.. I dont want to sell it and start over. Perhaps I can sell off the parts I dont want after modifying it.
