thanks guys, I got it all back together, filled to the brim with bearing grease. It is smooth as glass. the races appeared to be fine. I did notice that when I tighten up the BIG nut on top of the triple tree she got to feel a little chunky, so i backed it off until it felt smooth. Is there something I should know here or did I make the right call.

if you mean the round nut with holes for spanner wrench you did fine.do not overtighten or you will put flat spots in bearings over time.;) goodluck,happy wrenching!

yup that would be the one. I went habd tight and then a few taps with a screwdriver and small hammer.... seems ok. The stripped down and repainted triple looks awesome. IMHO
