Drive chain cleaning

Last year I used PJ1, or something chain lube, it was really sticky stuff. Beside kerosene, which is not exactly common around here, what could I use to clean the chain up? This is a fairly new x-ring and I don't want to eat the rubber out of it.

I have an X-ring chain I put on new a year ago. I use a chain lube bought at a motorcycle shop that says it's O-ring safe.

The way I clean the chain (after a ride when it's warm) is that I slowly rotate the rear tire backward (so my hand doesn't get eaten by the sprocket) and wrap a clean paper shop towel around the lower side of the chain to get most of the dirt and grime. Once I've done that a few times I use the chain lube and then wrap another clean towel around the chain and rotate the rear wheel to remove the excess lube. So far my bike is splatter free and the chain looks like new, but I haven't ridden in the rain yet.

All those sticky lubes are tough to clean after they harden, so best to clean off excess immediately after you spray the chain. Diesel fuel will work the same way as kerosene and wont hurt the rings. The chainlube I use doesn't harden, so I just use a dry rag.

Chris...prop up the rear of the bike...run it in 3rd gear with the throttle locked on at about half,and just gently apply Your tongue to the outsides of the chain,at the rear of the rear sprocket...BUT...wear safety goggles,Bud...there could be some debris that flies off!...SAFETY FIRST!!

:S ouch:woohoo: ! i just take mine to the carwash and soak my wheels and chain really good with 409 or anything like that and let it soak a while .then when i wash the rest of the bike i wash the the wheels and chain really good,then i take it out and drive it 15-20 minutes to dry the water off the chain and lube it up again.

I use WD40 to clean mine. I just put a couple sections of newspaper under the drip area. Sometimes it has to be done twice if I haven't cleaned it for a while.
It pays to clean behind your front sprocket cover as well. Again WD-40......The miracle spray-on juice!
I finish off with a bit of Maxima chain wax.

I do mine once a week with very hot soapy water and a real stiff brush. Water is almost a universal solvent especially when mixed with elbow grease. Maybe thats what WD-40 is made of. I like WD-40 as a degreaser.

All good stuff. I appreciate the responses. I don't want to complicate something simple so I'll center stand it, spin it and wipe/clean out with WD-40, Just love the smell of the stuff. Used to use it on my 12 guage back in the duck/goose hunting days. If WD doesn't get that PJ1 snot off, I'll go diesel. Atleast now I know what I can use. Seeing that our taste/smell senses are so closely linked, I'll probably like the taste as I employ Sandys pre-cleaning technique.:woohoo:
