I had to make a gauge once out of 304 SS. The engineering braintrust decided that it needed to be flat within 0.001" for a 9" long gauge. If I tried to cut more than 0.007" deep at a time that damned thing turned into a Pringle's potato chip. So I must have flipped that thing over 10 times to mill it down to size. All this for a go, no go gauge used to check the thickness and length of a peice of low density foam by SIGHT! French engineers, placed on this earth to try common sense daily.
