Currently in the process of finding the right frame and motor to start a full restoration. There is a 79 or 80 (not sure) kz1000csr I found pretty cheap but the frame looks different from the other projects I've seen. My question (for now) is: what is the best year or model frame to start with or in other words, is there any advantage to a particular frame design of a certain year or model kz 1000. I plan to do many mods to motor, front and rear end swap but keep dual shock.
Any answers to this would be much appreciated. thanks guys

I would look for a KZ 1000 from 1977 to 1980. Even a 1976 KZ900.

It doesn't matter wheather it is a LTD or standard. Most parts will bolt on. Roy

If interested, zedder can identify/confirm: (1) the motor year from the engine serial number; and (2) the frame year from the vehicle identification number.

Good Fortune! :)

Not sure if you have a bike or parts already to start with? A CSR 1000 is a 81 or 82 and has a different engine then a 73-80 (no kick start for one thing). However if I could go back in time and do everything all over again I would use a 81 up 1000 or 1100 for a build. The frames were better along with the brakes and suspension. Oh, and the motors were way more powerful stock then anything earlier. Now a days they are cheaper too because they don’t have the "collectability" factor the early bikes do. I would think with some searching you could find one for about $600 with a title.

Thanks a lot for the info, definitely need the kick start so I will look for an older model motor. as for the frame, you are probly right about them being better (stronger) than the 79s but there is a spot by the steering stem right in front of the gas tank that looks cobbled up on all the frames i look at. However in the photos i see of some restored on this sight, the frame tubes are beautifully attached to the steer tube/stem. I guess I cant tell if thats factory or fabbed up. Any thoughts?

is that the frame you are selling in the first pic? How much? I really like the swing arm conversion.

Hey, sorry for the delay. I was out of town for a couple of days.
I got rid of that Suzuki swing arm and shock deal 12 days ago on ebay. That frame is a stock 76 KZ900 with Ohio Title. It is powdercoated. I am puting the stock swingarm and frontend together with it. And a set of wheels. I want a $1000 for all the parts that I can come up with. lower end of engie. Have a seat, tail piece, 2 chrome fenders, wiring harness, stock air box, nice frt. master cylinder, nice complete back wheel assembly.

Wow! A 10 yr. old thread! I see some of my old stuff! I wish I had those items back! I gave that stuff away 10 yrs. ago!
But yes a 1978 frame. Those rear brackets for mufflers filled with water and rusted quick. Kaw factory switched back on the LTD 79-80 frames.
