How are your bars set up?

I don't have anything in my KLR, but that's becasue I'm about to put on brush guards. They help with the vibration, too.

The Z1 has BBs in it, held in with RTV, if I recall correctly.

That's true enough...

But back in the day, most of the *thumpers* I managed to get ahold of had been rebuilt so often and so poorly that they made better paint mixers than motorcycles... You could'a set the bars in concrete and they'd still have shook your fillings out. :P

Did manage to wangle a ride on a sweet '67 Bonneville that had been done right. Sweet ride. B)

Try bar-snake, it's easy to use and it works, you can get it online for $29.

Just a thought: Has anyone tried melting lead and pouring into their handlebar?

I took a piece of vinyl tubing and a tube of silicone from the hardware store. I filled the tube with silicone, cut it in 2, plugged each end with a cork, stuffed 1/2 down each end of the bar, and was able to greatly reduce the vibration. No rattle, less weight, same effect.
This is similar to the bar snake, but only cost ~$10 plus a little labor.

While that would have an effect, part of the rationale behind shot/BBs is that a portion of the energy transmitted to the bars as vibration is absorbed by the random motion of the individual shot and converted (...conservation of energy laws, pesky physics...)to an extremely low frequency out of the harmonic range of the bars...
