what is the fattest tire size?

Friend of mine was wondering what the fattest tire size that will fit a 77 900? I have yet to get my bike but that bunofasich bought him a 1977kz900 just like the bike i am waiting on. He was wondering what the fattest tire is that will fit between the swing arm.:blink:

I wouldn't put a 140 on a '75 400. Of course, I've never tried, I just don't think it looks like there's room in there. Lots of chain-rubbing...

so that should hold true for a 78ltd1000 as well??

thats what i figured. there isn't much room back there. Mabye i'll just stick with the stock size for now.

Here hondaman and a guy who works for kenda comment on tire sizes. Context is Honda but some good info there. I learned that side tread pattern greatly influences drift and also that there is this thing called a trigonometric tire. Didn't have that stuff 35+ years ago.

I had a 130 on mine and it filled the swing arm up pretty well.But I read an article in an old cyle mag that did a test on putting a size larger than stock on a bike rim .They found that the oversized tire did not handle as well as the intended size.ANYONE OUT THERE NOTICE ANY DIF.?

I went from a 120 to a 130 on my C1, and to me, it seems to handle better in the corners. Maybe thats just me. :whistle:

that would not surprise me. the more i modify my cars and bikes, the more respect i have for factory engineers. (but i still modify them anyway :lol: )

It is a wise practice to never mount a tire larger than the rim was designed to support. This is very important safety and handling issue.

And, of course, you may have another issue: the larger tire interfering with your swingarm. On my '78 KZ1000, I run a 130 X 18" Bridgestone SE11 rear tire on a DID 3.00 X 18" rim and there is very little clearance between this tire and the engine-side of the stock swingarm, so much so that if I don't have the rear wheel properly centered, the tire will rub against the swingarm.
