Do the rear shocks come apart? was created by HAFROD
My rear shocks on my 78 1000 are in good condition but one has a dent in the top cover. I thought I might remove the top of coil chrome covers?????

There's a pin you have to drive out and the shock unscrews....But it's NOT so simple to do. Get a Dremel with a cutting disc and gently cut the chrome cover off. You might find that the chrome on the spring underneath is rusty.. Get a set of these on Ebay for $79. Free shipping.

When I use to part out bikes, I took one whole day and tore shocks apart to clean. Some are easy and some are harder. The adjustable ones you have to be careful with not to lose parts. :woohoo:
Some I used a needlenose vicegrips to hold the shaft as far up as possible to unscrew . You could remove the top caps on both and have Mulholland looking shocks.
Nice looking shocks.

post some pics of the shocks in question hafrod.
some have a thick stepped washer (with a slot to slide passed the shaft)on top that you can remove after compressing the springs and then slowly releasing the spring, then remove the covers and re-install the spring and washer.
that is how my progressives are.
i use a large valve spring compressor to compress shock springs for removal.

My Progressives are like Leon says they have the slot to release them.

I see a roll pin on the top just under the attaching nut. Is this what I remove? Then it unscrews? Right hand threads?

I'm not sure where the dent is but can you just spin the cover around or perhaps spin the shock 180* to hide it?

I am planning a budget showable bike build and the dents would drive me crazy. I can't decide on just replacing the dented one or removing both. Give me some input on you guys opinions on the covers. Keep or remove? I'm planning a mild custom build

The stock shocks were probably the biggest weak point of the bikes. I would just replace them with Hagons. The Hagons are a million times better than stock but look similar (see pic of mine below). Let me know if you want a link and some info. If you do disassemble your shocks I would suggest you compress the springs before driving out the roll pin. Here's a link that may be helpful; it discusses dis-assembly of stock shocks. Ed

Yes, they should come apart.
Compress the spring using heavy duty zip ties.
Drive out the roll pin, the end of the shock should thread off and you can remove the cover.
Z1 shock I took apart.

I thought about having the springs powdercoated black but not sure if it would work with a spring constanly flexing. What the heck do they use?
