The idea is to turn a working KZ 1000 Tach into a Z1b by switching the internals while keeping the Z1 face plate and bottom.
Wish me luck.
This time I decided to record the procedure for future reference.
Opening the ring isn't too hard to do. Patience is required and possible self stabbing is a hazard. :pinch: Carefully find a spot where you can get a bight to start lifting up on the ring with a sideways twisting/prying motion.
Once you get started, you pry a little all the way around, then you do some more trying not split the ring. Make it even as you go. Each time gets easier and you'll make the ring become almost 90*. That's where the patience comes in.
You find a spot where you can get a small sharp screw driver in and give it a few taps.
Now it is open, you can use a larger screw driver to open it up.
I now have to go to the bike and get my old Tach and I'll do the same thing. It has been opened before so it should be easier being I only crimped it in three spots.
To be continued.

They made some changes in the later years like a cross brace, no bracket holding the drive housing and no defuser for the lights.
The bottom shell appears to be for the Speedo and Tach.
The gasket on the KZ Tach was still soft and seemed to be closed foam.
I tested with my drill. It was a little sticky at first so I loosened the back screws and played with the adjustment. I found the spot where the needle fell to zero every time.
Both top covers had a small dent in them. I used the best of the two. The dent is on the bottom where you can't see it. I can fill it later.
I use my line mans pliers to finish crimping it back up.
Now, where's my Speedo.
