subject says it all. I want to replace the right fork lower on my kz1000A1 because one of the fender mounts is broken/cracked apart. two questions:

1) is there a way to fix this?

2) if not, what's the specs on these forks so I can find a replacement.?

Thanks

76 kz900-1980 kz1000 should be the same as far as I know,Other bikes use same diameter forks but brake caliper mounting bosses are in differant location on some.

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

78 1000 ltd top nut fits a ratchet and rubber plug caps on the ends, earlier models have a large hex nut but the tubes are 36 mm. The lower slider tubes are a different design but smoother up front than earlier models and calipers are on the rear side of the sliders but same basic internal design the triple trees all interchange 73- 80.

the upper fork tubes a wise man would check for being bent and possibility can be at hand straightening them on a lathe
or just replace them both. If it makes you feel better

Thanks all. So I found a set of forks locally but I'm trying to determine if they'll work for my year/model. I'm confused about how changes in the brake mounting from year to year will affect me. The KZ100A1 has a single leading caliper. I measured the spacing of the mounting bracket holes and it's about 72mm center to center. If the replacement forks also measure 72mm c2c, then am I good to go?

I think the kz900 and kz1000A1 are the same, but I know that in 1978 the brakes are flipped behind the fork. Are these the same forks as on the 1977 but just mounted differently?

I just flipped my tubes around and now my caliper and rotor are on the right side and behind the lower.

And you did that with the stock forks or were they replacements?

Kawasaki lists two different part numbers for the 1977 A1 (44005-065/44006-063) and the A2 (44005-1031/44006-1031) and other years are different too.

Is there a way I can tell what year/model a fork is just by looking and measuring?

It is all my original 1977 KZ1000a parts...brake caliper, rotor, tubes and lowers.
The speedo drive stayed on the left side.
I literally pulled the tubes and lowers out of the triple tree and reversed them left to right.... right to left and put the rotor on the right side.

This helped a lot. I'm getting the forks locally for $70 and they look like the correct kz900/1000A1 match. 1977 kz1000's used two different fork systems. For what it's worth, here's what I've learned:

1975 Z1 and earlier is it's own thing, has the integrated reflector, hex bolt cap, and it's own caliper mount bracket spacing.

1976 Kz900 and 1977 KZ1000A1 use the same forks and are identified by the hex bolt cap on top and a symmetrical caliper bracket spacing of about 72mm c2c. They have the same internals

1977 KZ1000A2 and later have the rubber plug cap. They have different internals from the 900/1000A1.
