Different.
The 1977 KZ650-B1 frame was part number 32002-155.
The 1977 KZ650-C1 frame was part number 32002-1008.
The 1983 KZ650 H3 frame was part number 32002-1504.

Does the hardtail assy have measurements? how about a link. curious as to where it attaches.
I would compare the frame diagrams at Partzilla & frame pics on eebbaayy and compare them to yours.
If you can't find good pics of a 650-CSR frame, try the KZ750H Ltd as they are the same.
note: the 750-CSR is a Twin & that frame is completely different.
650-CSR frame: different steering head angle. different method of fuel tank attachment. I think the frame tubes for the seat are lower. no ducktail or seat cowling, so the rear of the frame is different. removable mufflers stays, instead of welded-on stays. I would guess the CSR fits around the engine the same, so the frames might be kind of similar or pretty much the same in that regard.

All the Z650's use the same basic "loop" around the engine with slight differences between models for body work , exhaust hangers etc and as mentioned lower seat rails for the ltd and revised head angle for the CSR.
A weld on hardtail should fit any year as you will be chopping of the rear of the frame anyway.

Sounds like solid advice . looking at the photo now and it pretty much does away with most of the frame changes.. I contacted the seller and they contacted the manufacturer.. I should know tomorrow.

That's more than a weld on hardtail.
That's pretty much two thirds of the frame.
With the amount of original frame gone i could make that fit anything.

That frame looks mighty flimsy to me - single backbone. etc. I wouldn't want to ride a KZ650 with that frame, but I guess like many "custom" bikes it is only going to be shown rather than ridden it won't matter much. Ed

I plan on riding it.. and i live in a bad area for hard tails.. I found out with my last two bikes. maybe i should consider this. I trust the up right tube to hold it together. The last bike i had was a death machine, it was the worst ride i ever had.. but worth it when i hit smooth.. it let's you know when to slow down.. sometimes unexpectedly!
