81 Kz750H LTDThis didn’t fit anywhere else so I’ll toss it here. I bought my bike as a salvage bike from an insurance company. Well when it was wrecked they took off the original speedometer/odometer so I have no idea how many miles are on the bike. Honestly it doesn’t bother me. I do want to change the OEM speedometer replacement to match the total mileage I have put on the bike. How hard/easy is it to change the mileage? I promise no foul play is in order. Thank you gents!

To tamper w the odometer you'd have to open the speedometer, but the meters aren't intended to be serviced so the job is a pain.  I have no idea how easy/hard it would be to change the mileage after opening the speedo.

A small screwdriver can be used to carefully pry off the metal band holding the speedo housing together.  Work slow and bend a little at a time working around the housing.  Once the speedo is apart it is possible to reset the mileage, although I can't describe the exact process.  I think you have to further take apart the speedo by loosening staked tabs holding on the odometer spindle.  Once those are loose the odometer can be removed and the mileage reset.

Nessism is correct. I have my 750 gauges apart to freshen them up. Unless your experienced here just live with the ODM reading. You can destroy a good gauge because of a want. See red arrows of stakes that need to be releases to access the ODM spindle.

I gotcha, as far as keeping the gauge accurate, can this tamper with any of the accuracy? I think I’ll see what I can do Monday because the glass also needs a bad cleaning and both bulbs in the speedometer are out. Are there any YouTube videos of the process of removing the ring?

Just splitting the shells will not affect accuracy. Like Nessism says, use a small flat screwdriver and from the bottom (gauge face down on your bench) start bending up the stainless steel crimp ring. Small lifts at a time. You will have to go around the gauge several times to bend the ring up enough to release the shells. Patience is your friend here. There is a gasket sealing to two halves. Be careful not to damage it. The top shell will come off and the gauge mechanism will stay in the bottom shell.

EDIT: The bulbs are replaceable without splitting the shells.

I’ve got the gauges split and y’all are very correct. Pain in the rear to split the ring. But they are apart now. My next question is how do I remove the trip knob? Screwed on? Pressed on? Thank you all. I’ll post some pics when I am in.

Sorry but that didn’t work. It just spun and spun and spun. Even went both directions ensuring that it never spun the shaft. Maybe some heat will work it off if it’s pressed on.

It should be LH threaded, so you have to turn it clockwise to remove it >> grab & hold the shaft w pliers while unscrewing the knob. remove the green bottom housing beforehand for access to the shaft.

Unfortunately it is not left hand thread. Believe me I wish it was. I attached a set of code grips to the rod on the other side of the gauge housing, then twisted the knob as hard as I could in both directions. It would spin and spin with no avail. Regardless I have achieved what I originally set out to achieve, my mileage now reads 1800 miles. I’ll toss a picture at the end. Now to wait for my LED lights from SuperbrightLEDs to come in and I’ll clean the inside of the glass and button everything back up.
