Clymer says to take off front wheel for brake pads

Do I really need to take off the front wheel? Can’t I just remove the caliper?
79 KZ650 single disc.

You could probably try & find out. It is only 2 bolts after all. On my bike, I HAVE to take the calipers off to remove the front wheel.

I don't know about the 650 but on a 900/1000 no need to remove the front wheel to change pads.

How do y’all get the front wheel off the ground for service? I’ve read that people will place a wooden block under the crank case? Do you use a jack to do that?

You could do something like this

 

You could do do it with a single 2 x 4 under the steering head but one bump could send the whole thing sidways...and down

Before I got my lift I used a bottle jack when it was on the center stand. Now I can do almost anything. 
In order to remove my 110/90-19 wheel I have to remove the calipers and fender. The larger tire makes the bike more stable on and off the road and here in the desert that's a must.

You definitely don't need to remove the wheel to replace pads. Remove the caliper, push back the piston, put in the pads. I can't believe any manual would say remove the wheel. Throw that manual in the trash.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The only thing I would add is before you push the piston back remove the reservoir cap on the master cylinder (when you push the piston back fluid is displaced into the reservoir, if the cap is on this can cause pressure and force fluid out of the vent)

It's not all that difficult to remove the wheel and it exposes the brake pads for a change out.  Like many other tasks it's just one way to do it.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The factory service manual says to remove the wheel.
