Once you have wire wheeled or scuffed the zinc coating it will tarnish easy or rust. Zinc is a easy and cheap way to finish hardware that will keep for years. Time does take its toll though. Around here we have a plating company that can re-zinc either clear (silver) or yellow. Usually a large bocket of assorted hardware costs around $30-$40. Laquer will probably not hold up for long. And any paint thats wrenched will probably crack.

That kit is VERY interesting. I wonder if it really works. I noticed it says it will plate "properly prepared" parts. That could be the tricky part??
