Do I need to get a new helmet?

I got it about 2 days before I found and joined KZR (needed it to test drive a 78 KZ200). It's 4 years old max. I'm now planning to get a new one after the season.

You know, just keep it as a second or spare.

This talk about helmets has me wondering. I don't leave my helmet on the bike when I leave it, say when I go into Home Depot. I carry it in with me. I know my SR has helmet hooks that I could "lock" my helmet onto the bike and I suppose if someone wanted to steal it they would have to cut the strap off-rendering it pretty much worthless.I paid almost $250 for my helmet and I don't want to chance it. What does everyone else do? Leave it hooked on the bike, take it in? Anyone ever get theirs stolen?

I would buy new one.
I used to keep a Shoei X-8 shell only with the liner and foam pulled out to show people.

The outer shell looked fine, very few nicks and minor scratches, but held it up to the light and could see the major stress cracks throughout the shell.

I'm a safety freak, ex racer, and hey, its our heads we're talking about.

If a helmet cant survive a 24inch fall....then what the hell will it do for ya when ya hit the ground at 45-75 mph?????????:huh: Just wonderin. Not debating.

Helmets are designed for 1 impact.

Although the helmet may look ok, the integrity of the shell may be compromised.

A helmet with stress cracks from dropping at a few feet will react differently from a new helmet in a high speed impact.

There might not be anything wrong with it, but hey, play it safe I always say.

I ride everyday, rain or shine, and even though I'm a poor cheapskate, I even replace mine every 1 1/2 - 2 years, and I won't wear a cheap helmet.

Funny how the two answers contradict themselves (although the first one to me seemd a little less credible). I have a feeling there is no right answer for this question, just educated and uneducated opinions. I've got to pay for the work which was more than I had planned so I may have to wait to buy a new one but I thihnk I've now been convinced to do it sooner than later. Of course, I'll want to get that rarest of rare helmets, 100% protection and safety for little or no money. Anyone have one sitting around?:lol:

Something to keep in mind when purchasng a new helmet...

Try them on.

Different brands even diffrent models of the same brand will fit differently.
