My wife gave me a Teknic last Christmas. Elbow and back armor, wore it today, worked pretty good at speed and wasn't oppressive at stops. Much cooler than even my light leather jacket. I'm pretty sure it was in your price range.

Joe Rocket Phoenix 4.0 Mesh Jacket, $134.99 - $152.99 (depending on size) at newEnough.com.

I have a Phoenix 3 that I wear in the really hot days (when it's going to be 80 to 85+), and I wear the Phoenix pants every day no matter what.

I have one of the ubiquitous Joe Rocket mesh jackets. It has a zip in liner for rain/chilly AM/PM. The guy I got it from paid like $120 for it. The only thing I don't like about it is the velcro at the cuffs. Without thick gloves it's difficult to get the cuffs tight and with thick gloves, it's difficult to handle the material to get them tight.

I live in the city and in the middle of the afternoon, riding anywhere on my hiking routes I don't wear a jacket. Jeans, hiking boots, long leeve shirt, helmet. If I'm going on a 4 lane or longer distance, I wear the jacket.

I bought a Cortech jacket off a guy on craigslist. It has venting, armor, and a removable liner for switching between hot and cold temperatures and reflective patches. In the store here I saw them for like 156 and man did I dodge that bullet. Check craig's

I have a Teknic jacket I got from CL for $75. With the zip-in liner, it will do for cool mornings, without, the breeze goes right through it. Armor on shoulders, elbows, and back. My biggest problem on a hot day is the helmet! Full face is smoking my head! :(

Suggestion: get a well vented full face helmet.

Wearing a good full face helmet with good venting and the shield down will keep you cooler than not wearing a helmet at all.

Trust me on this, I ride all summer long here..115+ degrees...

What I wear in the summer...

Shark RSI helmet
Castle Vented Leather Half-Gauntlets
Gericke Leather/Textile mesh jacket
Alpinestar SMX-4 Boots
Rocket Steel pants/Firstgear Pilot pants

for 105+ degree...helpful tip...

If you own a 70oz Camelback, pull out the bladder, filled half full slips nicely in most back armor pouches and is easy to run the tube right under your helmet.

I like me Joe Rocket Phoenix too, but I heard the newer ones aren't as good.

I got an Alpinestars mesh jacket with a zip in liner and lots of armour. Plain black with a tiny logo - I hate logos - which will get covered by a KZR patch as soon as I get them ;)

Rocket changed manufacturers a few years back, and my opinion is the same. The quality took a serious dip.
