Product Review: AS Uotani SPII Full Power Kit (by PAMS)

So some years ago, while I was browsing webike Japan, I came across an interesting ignition from AS Uotani.

It had some interesting perks compared to the typical dyna ignition that I and most others use, primarily the following:

- a computer that controls the spark, timing, and rev limits using a simple signal wheel instead of points or a mechanical advance.

- Hotter spark

- Supposedly coils that are more reliable than Dyna (I personally have had to replace the Dyna coils on my Z once in the last 10 years).

So honestly, there's not a huge amount of benefits to go with this igniton at almost twice the price of a Dyna setup.

I eventually came across a Kawasaki shop in Japan called PAMS (Plus Alpha Mechatronic Service).  The product development they do for Z's and KZ's is really interesting and their blog is awesome.  They had their own version of the AS Uotani ignition, loaded with maps based on their own experience building and tuning these bikes.

Unfortunately they didn't ship internationally.

Well go figure over the summer, 4 years after first finding it and reaching out to them, PAMS partnered with an international shipper to sell their product overseas.

Since the Yen was low compared to the Dollar at the time, I immediately placed an order.

Install was easy enough, though I had to re-locate my rear master cylinder as it was in the way of the computer.

Coils mounted. I really really like how these are done compared to the dyna coils.  Rather than ring connectors that can short out against the mounting bolt, these have an actual plug:

Here's everything mounted up.  I got an actual plug lead crimper like a big boy instead of mangling it with pliers like normal:



I relocated the rear master to in front of the battery box.  
I also got rid of the catch can for the breather vent and ran a braided hose out the back of the bike:

So what do I think of this kit?
I really really really like it.  I was never quite happy with how I had the Dyna ignition setup on my bike... there was always something slightly off.  The bike feels great and runs smoothly.

Would I recommend it?
It depends...  what is the exchange rate?  Is your bike setup (stock points, dyna, etc) running well?  It all plays a factor.

I will say that if you're looking to replace your ignition due to it wearing out or failing, it's definitely worth considering.

out of interest what was the cost ?
 
When I bought it in July, it came out to around $600.
