Miles to go.....? was created by missionkz
Took the day off and went on a nice day long foothills ride on the 77' KZ1000 with my bride the other day.
The total trip from the morning fill up until refilling that evening was, 178miles on the OD.
I hit reserve at about 165miles but had no trouble getting to a gas station, 1 1/2miles from our home, for fuel.
When filling the tank back up,.... to just about a 1/4" below the neck with the bike on the center stand, ....it took +3.8 gallons! YIKES!!
I think that might be the furthest I ever have gone on this thing with one full tank.
Not including the Z1R, what is the forum consensus on miles per tank full with the 900s through KZ1000 ?

I am running 15/35 sprockets, Denco headers with street baffling, a dual pod air cleaner set up (one pod for each pair of 26mm carbs), #20 pilot jets, needle clip stock and 115.0 mains.
Oh, also been lazy and still running the stock dual points plate with 1.7 ohm ballast and green Dyna coils ... well, because it runs so damn good anyhow, I guess.
I still have that damnable oil leak under the head from the crappy O'ring around the cam chain channel.
I HATE that SOB.

I never got that kind of mileage even when it was a 903. 3.8 gallons? That's empty. Sure there's nothing wrong with your petcock?
Yeah, I always hated the leaky O ring. That's why I bought a fiber one piece gasket meant for a 73 Z1 when I did the valve job. Sure it is small for the bore, but it was cheap and I plan on a copper one piece. That's the only hang up now. Still recovering from the OR trip.
Years ago, I blew a head gasket between cylinders and still had a used set of 903 head gaskets. I had no money and it was my only transportation, so I sprayed it with silver paint and put it in. It worked for a long time.

I have always got around 46 miles to the gallon and try to stop every 100+ miles.
I hit reserve at around 120 miles and I try not to use it.

I guess in 75/76 I could go from Santa Monica to this place and hit reserve. That's about 130 miles. No way could I do that now.

See? That is part of my question... was I like 2-3 miles away being completely dry!!??
I ran out of gas once and took the tank off and tilted it way back and over to the petcock side and got another 4-5 miles out of it before finding a filling station. NO idea how much further I could have gone.
I have never drained the fuel tank and then refilled it to see what the actual fuel volume is vs useable fuel.... but this time it was 3.8 gallons....
Normally when I hit reserve, it is around 125-135 miles and takes about 3.3 gallons of gas to top it off and I also look for gas at 120 miles.

****
Just looked in my KZ1000A FSM and it says fuel volume is 16.7L.
16.7L / 3.7853 l/g = 4.4 gallons.... sorry... I just do not believe that.

Back in the 70s we still had good leaded gas that produced good mileage, today's gas is just crap. :(

That's when they started changing the octane ratings just to confuse us. Carter got in and they really went to town. Been at it ever since.
Congress is bought and paid for, banks are abusing their depositors and companies are double dipping their customers and still only 17% of registered voters actually vote. The list goes on and on. F all that.
In this article it says they fitted a larger tank. I have two tanks. One from my original Z1 and another from a wrecked KZ 900 I got in the early 80's. They're both the same. I've been looking in my manuals and have found nothing about the tank size. This Clymer is crap. We all know that. In my old ones that were stolen, this information was in them. So my question is, what is the capacity of the Z1/Kz 900 tanks and what is the KZ 900 LTD? It is supposed to be smaller so the "Lines would be better." Yeah right.

I wish. Thought about putting duel Harley tanks on mine like Miller. Nah, not worth it. They're 5 gallons though.
