Oil filter brand --- Which is the best?

Aside from using Fram in a bike, I have been using them a in a 1986 Toyota Tercel (Fram # PH2951)for the past 230,000 miles. Should I be worried? I have a lifetime supply of Z1 filters I ordered through a friend who had a dealer number so I got them wholesale about 20 years ago and I don't even know what brand they are. I change oil and filter every thousand miles on the Z1 using Castrol GTX 20w-50 or 10w-40 dependening on the season. The bike will turn 68,000 miles this week end. I use generic 10w-40 in the Toyota and change oil and filter every 2,500 miles. Perhaps frequent changes are as critical as a good filter for long engine life. I am as surprised as the others above that Fram was found wanting.

I'd imagine that regular oil+filter changes would do a lot to mitigate the effects of a crappy filter. The linked article mentioned Fram letting dirty oil seep back into the pan, which probably means that some of the crap that's been stuck in the filter comes back out with it.

Regular oil changes should help to flush out the garbage, hopefully. As long as the filter is relatively durable and doesn't let dirty oil blow by, I'd think that regular oil and filter changes should help to reduce engine wear.

That doesn't mean I'll keep using Fram, but it does mean that I won't feel too bad about having used Fram in the past.

BTW, I agree that frequest oil & filter changes are probably more important than the brand. Hope this is helpful.
