valve cover swap?

valve cover swap? was created by wiredgeorge
Picked up 1979 KZ1000E (ST) this weekend. Will the valve cover from an earlier KZ/Z fit if I don't use any of the hoses? I have extra covers... I already know I can block off the nozzles on the stock valve cover if they are not used or run a hose between them but I don't like the look of doing that and using a cover I already have would be cheaper than buying APE block-off plates. Thanks!

If you switch covers, you'll get exhaust flames toasting the underside of the tank unless you weld up the emissions ports...

you don't need to weld them... just tap them with a pipe tap and put pipe plugs in the holes.

I've always wondered about this...do you have to remove the head to tap the holes? Wouldn't the shavings make their way into the head? I'd like to do it myself but I'm wondering if I have to wait until the head is off again.

Don't know about the swap, but I just bought some 1/4" aluminum plate and used my mill to make my own emissions cover. cost about $10 and a bit of time.

Just out of curiosity, why are you swapping the covers?

well you are asking someone who has repaired spark plug threads with the head on so maybe I'm not a reliable source.... I just load the tap with grease to catch the chips and then use a shop vac with a small end to get anything that falls.
