Not claiming to be correct, but the info I have found would indicate 1978 was first year vm28ss carbs were offered (Z1R)

If you have an accelerator pump under #2 carb they would be 1979 or 1980.   gd4now is correct that a version without a pump was used on the '78 Z1R.

In any case there should be a model number on the outlet flange of each carb.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

If your brass is good you should only buy what you need, gaskets, o rings and fuel tees. If your  dead set on kits I’d recommend Keyster. Buy direct from the Japan site. The only difference is the jet sizes and pilot screws from kit to kit. Pick the kit that has the jet range you need. It won’t have the accelerator diaphragm. Go to Redline Cycle for those. Especially the o-ring the fits over spray nozzle. It’s a very hard to find size. See picture

Ill check later today today but I’m pretty sure this is the kit I bought. I bought kits because the used carbs I got were missing brass, it was cheaper for me to buy kits then individual parts.

If your planning to run pod filters, don’t without adding the air corrector jet that Zed1015 sells. They will amaze you at how well they smooth out the pilot circuit.

VM28SS on kz1000 1978 thru 1980.
Z1R , LTD, MK2 , and ST shaft.
Just look at your current jet sizes and needle code to determine what model they are off.
You can cross reference either from a factory manual or by matching up to the contents list of the Keyster kits.
Unless damaged you must retain as many genuine Mikuni parts as possible.
Main parts to renew = Gaskets, 'O' rings (use viton replacements) and usually the float valve and choke plunger.
Fuel tees also perish. If they don't soften and expand after being soaked in fuel a while then brass or alloy 'O' ringed replacements are available.
If you must replace any brass internals then go for genuine Mikuni first with most available from Niche Cycles and Jets R Us.
I don't recommend any pattern jet kits apart from KEYSTER.
