Bike will not start. was created by Rev
Ok, from the beginning. I have a 78 KZ650B2 with VM24ss carbs. A flow through air box with a UNI filter, Maxi Dwell point ignition with dyna 3 ohm coils and wires. Have installed a relay switch from the battery to the coils to make sure I have 12V to the coils. The bike ran well when I parked it three years ago and it was parked with dry clean carbsPut fresh gas in and it started with starter fluid and then ran on the gas. Shut it off and started it a few times with no problems. The next day it would start using starter fluid, but will not continue to run on gas.A few months before it was parked, I striped and cleaned the carbs and switched my mains from 107 to 102 jets because it was running rich, and I am now running all stock jets. I did a static sync and set the floats to 2mm from the rim.I have rechecked the floats and they still good and when I drain the bowls gas flows non-restricted.The bike's cold compression is 150, 150, 146,150 and my plugs are gaped to 32 and clean.I am at a lost as to why it will not start. Any ideas anyone.

Thanks
Bill

Have you tried covering the intake, it sounds like air leaks so is not drawing the fuel from the carbs

Yes, I had plug the intakes in the air box to create a vacuum, but when I unplugged them the same results.

Is your timing advancer working correctly?  My other thought is carburetion.  2 mm sounds a bit high but should not cause your problem.  I normally set them at about 3.5 mm.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

That is my next move, before I yank the carbs again, is to go and check the timing is where it is suppose to be and make sure the advance mechanism is lubed and functioning.

Check your ignition with a timing light. Verify your timing is set correctly and the coils are firing.
How do the spark plugs smell after you try to start the bike...don't use starting fluid. Do they smell like gas?

I think I would pull the carbs and check the pilots. I know you said the carbs were dry when parked but if it starts on ether, then it's a fueling problem.
