Use an "engine cleaner", not carb cleaner, don't want to break down the varnish coating on the windings. Just spray some around the working area of gauge. This will dissolve the tack, blow it out, recheck function. Engine cleaner won't damage anything and what i use is water soluble.

Cover the display, heat up the needle center and pop it up using two tea spuns as leveler, what else do you need.....

If the needle and hub is plastic I wouldn't use heat.

Had to repair/modify the tool...no surprise there.
Managed to pull the plastic needle off the knurled brass end fitting affixed to the needle shaft.  Definitely need such a tool to prevent damaging the needle shaft, or potentially pulling it out of the mechanism.

That's super innovative dav! Ya know a modified tool is a "one-off" and exclusively Your creation now. You Hit All the correct concepts in theory and understanding of the incorrect "spoon" mass delusion my friend. I'm sure these field gauges share the same workings as the mechanical ones, always going to be a couple brass shims that are slotted onto the needle shaft to control end-play. Look with a magnifying glass down at the base of the needle below the face and you'll see them. Unfortunately that "tool" won't work on the earlier ones because the needle assembly is capped at the top.
