As you can see this brace is a bit deeper than those Ive seen posted up here.

Even with the gained distance inbetween the fender and fork brace, it seems like I'm still going to have to lower the fender to the wheel to make this work. If someone has a stock 80KZ550 assembled at the moment, can I get an Idea of how much clearance there is?

the stock fender/tire clearance is about 1/2 inch.

this is an 1980 A1. the top of the dust seal is about 7/8 inch below the top of the fender.

(on the 1981 A2, the top of the dust seal is at or above the top of the fender.)

see here for the 1981 A2 and 1981 gpz:

Thanks Duncan! Mystery solved.

I just love the look of that channel fender, it'd break my heart to cut or reshape one of them. Ah well, I'm getting better at making hard decisions.

hm.... drill out the rivets, cut the (stand-offs?) and re-rivet?

I just notified the seller on ebay about the discrepancy.

well my idea didn't work either. the fork brace arrived and not only does it need a huge spacer to fit over the fender, but it's way too bulky to fit between the fork and the fender. the only fork brace i've found for the 1980 550A1 is a tarozzi (and it's a bit pricey at about $185AU):
