I’d like to add one other trick to the above great methods. Go to your local hardware and get a couple one pound boxes of truss head metal stud framing screws. See stock photo pulled from the internet. Add them to a half full tank, make sure it’s sealed off and shake, shake, shake till your arms want to fall of then shake some more. Pour out And strain out the screws. It helps break up any solidified solids, and breaks the rust loose.

hahahaha "shake until your arms fall off" will do. one of my friends told me to go to home depot and get some skinny chain, throw that in and shake it.

I used vinegar & a small 3' chain, it worked good. 
I read where someone wrapped the tank in an old sleeping bag & put it in the dryer, sounds funny but I think I might try it next time, it's hard work shaking that vinegar filled tank !

Just make sure the dryer doesn't go BOOM !!! ha ha.

With EvapoRust you just fill up the tank and wait a day or two, then do the diesel rinse. No shaking till your arms fall off, nuts and bolts or possibly causing damage tumbling in the dryer.
This reminds me of the debates over on V4 Muscle Bike about what to use in your ultrasonic tank. Everyone is always trying weird stuff instead of using the proper solution. I've seen stained and ruined carbs from some of the attempts at carb cleaning. We've cleaned over a dozen gas tanks with EvapoRust with excellent results and the EvapoRust is still good to use on more rusty hardware and parts.

Evaporust is fantastic stuff.  It's not cheap, though, and it loses effectiveness with use, so it has a limited lifespan.  I went to phosphoric acid because it's cheaper, and it can be used again and again.  

Heat helps with whatever you use.
The first tank I de-rusted was in the summer, I left it out in the sun, filled with vinager, on a 95 degree day. After 1 day the tank looked great.
Another time I used vinager was durring the winter. I left the tank in a 40 degree garage for over 2 days, and very little rust was removed.
I may use an aquarium heater the next time I need to de-rust a tank in the winter.

I priced out EvapoRust would have cost over $200 (CAN) to fill the the tank.

I saw a guy in a recent Youtube video tape a rusty gas tank with screws in it to the rear wheel of a jacked up 4-wheeler.  
Put it in gear and let it spin for an hour or so.


 

Like some, I have noticed some interior tank rust developing.  Appears to be surface rust at the bottom of the gas tank. Not flaky rust.  The rust is seen at the seams, left and right.  The tank had been coated with Kreem ( a white – tan color inside)  by the PO and not a great job obviously.  Ie,  No flow or coverage to the seams.This spring, I am considering a vinegar wash with screws to remove the surface rust at the seams. I do Not plan to strip the Kreme coating off.  It seems to be okay and not flaking or any residue.Anybody had a similar experience with good results to achieve some effective preventative maintenance to save the tank from further rust but not remove the tank liner with a complete chemical strip method?    Or any insight or your perspective is welcome too.
