I appreciate the feedback.  I have considered the slack tension under decel, so I see your concern.  I have also see fixed rollers depending on position in relation to the pivot work without great force.

I think I’ll remove the idler and keep an eye on it.  I have considered putting the plastic pad on the lower tube, but that will also just make less clearance, so I’ll leave it and see if it comes in contact.

Thanks again,

So got my Ford Escort exhaust sprocket back from the plater.  Not sure, but thinking about having it and the alternator cases chromed?

I am torn as I kind of like the shiny, satin look and the cast aluminum goes with the engine cases…..

What do you think?

That belt drive setup is very cool.
Just curious, will the alternator turn fast enough at low engine RPM's?

Scotty I tend to agree, I love the set-up but do think it may propose problems due to the pulley ratio. Normally the crank pulley is bigger than the alternator pulley (normal is a 3:1 ratio) this one appears to be closer to a 1:2 ratio. The alternator needs to spin at around 1200rpm (alternator speed) to start charging (in this case that would be approx 2500rpm crank speed) full output in this case would be around 4000rpm (alternator speed) which would be 8000rpm crank speed. At regular street speeds between 3 & 7000rpm you won't achieve the full output of the alternator.  Is there any scope to switch the pulleys ?

All,

i appreciate the feedback, but all of that was calculated in based on the rpm chart/curve from Denso on the alternator.  In addition, due to the modern electrical system I have designed, consumption, even with lights  on, is much less than prior.

keep in mind the pulley ratio needs to account for the operational RPM of the engine and this engine has 2-3 times the RPM speed than the engine that alternator came off of.

If I can dig out the calculations if I can find them
in my stacks of paper.

Thanks Cory, I wondered about the speed when I saw the pulleys, but assumed the pulley ratio may be related to a max RPM for the alternator.  Making sure it was part of the plan.

Understood.  We used to use these at work all the time on small Kubota diesels.  IIRC the maximum sustained RPM is 4500?  So I am running it 1:2 ratio (good eye Wookie!) to make sure it doesn’t come apart.

Now all of this was figured out YEARS ago, and I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, so it may turn out to be too slow at idle with this regulator, and if that is the case, I think I know a guy who can re-machine a new pulley……
