Dropped My Bike
21 Sep 2007 15:18
So the other night I rode to the Red Eye Saloon, and drank, I swear, a single beer. When I left to head home my '79 650 would crank, but not fire. Once in a while it'd cough, but wouldn't catch.
Tried shutting off the fuel petcock, cranking with throttle closed, wide open, various choke settings, et cetera, nada.
So I went back in and waited a while, drank, again I swear, only 1 more beer, then tried it again. Again, nada.
So I started to push it home; not that far. As I was pushing I figured I'd try to push start it. Pulled in the clutch, put it in first, got up to running speed, and popped the clutch.
It fired, but bucked and snorted, and the upshot was that it bucked out of my grip and fell over on its side. Broke the right rear turn signal, and broke my windshield into 4 large pieces, and bent the brake handle. But, after picking it up it started and I rode it home.
Had plenty of gas; don't know why it wouldn't start. Have not had any trouble with it. Some days are like that.

I fiddled with the petcock and whatnot, but didn't specifically check the vacuum line. I did check gas; the tank had plenty. Still dunno what happened.

I kind of lucked out on the parts issue. The Gringo pointed me to an ebay sale of a seat (he told me - correctly - mine is ugly, and he's been watching for seats for me. So, in addition to the seat, the guy was selling other parts, and I was able to get what I broke, though not the seat.
The only real expense will be for a new windshield. But I'll tell ya, it has much better acceleration without that windshield, so I'm conflicted.
