78 or 79 kz650 parts bike for 81 kz650? was created by agrestixrock
A guy at work has a 78 or 79 kz650 that is completely torn apart. Every nut and bolt it labeled and bagged but everything is there. I have an 81 kz650 H1 and was wondering if any parts are usable between the 2 bikes. I am mainly interested in the 4 into 1 header but other parts I'm not sure about as I don't know what my bike still needs. Cosmetically my bike is missing the tail fairing which that bike has. Sounds like I can get it very cheap like around $200 and wondering if it would be worth getting and building, or using it for parts. If parts are able to be used between the bikes I may use the parts id want off it and build it then sell it if I can get it running. I've never built an engine before or anything like that for that matter. I got my bike in non running condition and worked through the book to get it running and am still working on it. I am also very limited with my work area as I live in an apartment. I just need to know if the parts can be used between the bikes before anything. Like would there be parts from the later model that can work on my 81 but not parts from my 81 that will work on the 78 or 79? I know that the ignition systems are different and I don't have a kick start which that one does. Any input helps! Thanks!

The 4-1 exhaust system should fit, but you'll probably have to fab a muffler hanger bracket. The seat, side covers & fenders are different. The CSR will have different ignition & charging systems and it has a HyVo cam chain instead of a roller cam chain, so all of that is different. I think the camshafts are the same & I think the valve components are either the same or interchangeable (not sure of everything, though), and they share some transmission components. Installing a kick starter on the csr will require splitting the engine cases.

Your KZ650-H1 did not come with a "tail fairing." It came with a rather large seat and it had the chrome fender behind/under the seat without a plastic tail. Ed

You dont get much för 200us at Partzilla. Grab it and put your engine in that frame. Assemble the old engine without gaskets just to practise. It's good therapy. Tear it down again and seal it up the second time.
