Hey all,

I’m currently not an owner of any KZ model, but I’m in the process of hopefully buying one soon. I’m interested in buying this listing on Marketplace but I’m unsure as to if it’s a good deal or not.

Ad says it runs well. If so, then I'd say yes & make an offer less than the asking price.
Just an FYI. Assuming the year is correct, It's a KZ1000-M1 CSR.

Alright, thank you. I'm probably going to check it out tomorrow. Is there anything I should look out when I go over it? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to motorcycles or mechanical stuff in general, so really anything helps.

If you buy an older bike you need to be prepared to fix stuff on an ongoing basis. Few bike shops nowadays will touch older bikes, so unless you have a friend who is an experienced wrencher my advice would be to decide how much mechanical work you want to do. You will need to invest in tools if you buy that bike.

It looks to be in reasonable condition, although a bit dirty. Some things to check...

Does the current owner have a registration and/or ownership?

Do signals work as intended? Horn? Headlight hi/lo beam? Brake lights? (Should be on while running, and go bright when touching the brake) Do all the dash lights work? The Kill switch? Any other parts of the controls?

Do the brakes work? Does the steering move freely? Is the gas tank clean inside? Tire condition?

Any engine ticks or strange noises? Exhaust pipes sound OK? Be sure to look underneath to see if they are rusted out.

Look under the seat...is the tool kit still there? Owner's manual?

Lastly, does the owner have a service manual or any spare parts? Does he know the bike history?

These are just things off the top of my head.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I think this bike is a reasonable deal but i would not be surprised at all if you dumped $600 into it just to get it road worthy- and thats you doing the work.

Looks like you will need a brake caliper/ Master cylinder rebuild at the bare minimum. That will be anywhere from a simple rebuild at $80 to needing new calipers and Master because they are so corroded - $200+ depending on parts availability on ebay. Probably could use new brake lines as well. there's another $80. Valve cover will have to come off to repair oil leak, - there's $30 for a gsaket


This is my checklist for buying a "running bike". Most of these thing are easily checked and can add to the cost quickly even if the bike runs and drives. bring a flashlight and be prepared to crawl around on the ground

Check gas tank for rust.
Check rear sprocket for wear
check chain for wear
Check throttle cables for age, fraying
Check shocks for leakage
check fork seals for leakage
check forks for pitting
Check brake pad wear
Check brake discs for scoring
check date stamp on tires should not be more than 5-7 years old
check wear on tires
check wheel weights to see if there is an excessive amount - could indicate bent wheel
Wiggle wheels to see if bearings are wobbly
check brake calipers/ MC for leakage
check to see if carbs are leaking- may need rebuild - if its been sitting this is more than likely
If the owner will let you - pull the spark plugs, inspect them for signs of fouling or damage
if owner will let you and you have the tools - do a compression test.

Awesome, thank you guys for responding, I really appreciate it. I'll make sure to check out as many of those things that I can when I go look at it tomorrow, and I'm fine with doing all of the work myself as well. It's being sold by a motorcycle dealer/mechanic/parts store, and the messages I received over Messenger lean towards it being a clean title bike I can register without a problem.

I'll update you all on how it goes tomorrow, thank you again.
