Bike got here about an hour ago safe and sound.  First thing, I cleaned off the serial number on the motor and it's even closer to the frame than I thought...  Motor: Z1E 10566, Frame: 10629, so almost certain this is the motor that came with the bike.  Also, rims are stamped Takasago 3C 303 and there's practically no pitting anywhere. They should clean up like new. Does the 3C 303 say anything about whether they're original?

I know I have a rectifier and I think I have the electrical plug setup for under the right side cover.  Will check tomorrow if you are planning to do a full resto.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Sorta like the excitement of getting a puppy!  So much discovery, so many possibilities...

If you don't already have them, get a Z1 shop manual.  A parts manual wouldn't hurt to refer to the blowups.

JIS screwdrivers, a hand impact driver to loosen stubborn screws and JIS bits for it.

Gonna  be  fun project!

Kinda rough but sometimes I buy things so I know what I’m looking for. Then I start looking at parts lots. You can find hidden expensive items that way. Sometimes people miss identify items, or just don’t know what they have.

This is true!

On the early XT250 there is a bolt with a wingnut (rather than hex) top that is used to hold the cover on the tool kit compartment. They are not available anywhere, and I searched globally for months to find one. Then I ran across a parts lot that had a bunch of exciting OEM bits: battery strap, reusable cable ties, some unusual fasteners, engine mount brackets with hardware, and... the magical wingnut bolt.  I paid about $30 for the lot (shipped) and would do it again in a heartbeat.

To the OP: if you're searching on auction sites, "[bike model] parts lot" seems to be the most common listing term (which makes sense, of course). Some sellers use "[bike model] goodies" so you might as well try that too. Good luck!

Pulled the valve cover off to check clearances and to strip off the orange paint.  Couple things....  cam chain was very loose... would have jumped teeth had it been started.  I removed the cam chain tensioner and it appeared to not have been released after last time it was installed.  PO was obviously inside.  BUT.... the thing that's got me curious is... shouldn't there be a worm drive gear attached to the back of the tach cable attach fitting?  Doesn't really show too good in the picture but there's nothing back there to be driven by the tach gear on the exhaust cam.  Anyone know what the thing I'm missing is called?
