Any sure way to ID a MKII engine or just the cases more specifically 1980 mkII cases. I did a search and found info on the extra strengthening rib behind oil filler. Any other sure signs. This engine shown falls within the number range

Apart from the engine numbers and strenghtening rib the main difference of the MK2/ST cases is the trans cover bolt pattern which is different and that there are two location bosses for the gear selector.
One position is for use with the chain drive MK2 and the other for the shaft drive ST.

The MK2 engine has 32 teeth on the cam sprockets.  Pull the valve cover and count.

Also, does the head contain ports for engine vapours?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Agree with zed1015.  And here's a pic showing the difference in the trans covers.  The MkII is on the right.  Note how the bottom edge dips down whereas the early KZ cover has a straight edge.  Hope this helps.
