If you do a little research you'll find Crawford was drunk on the set and his costars didn't want be in the car while he was driving. Finally he was only allowed to drive in short scenes. He liked to fight so you can see cuts and bruises on his face in many episodes. 
It was one of my favorite shows in the day but as always the truth comes out. 
At least Adam 12 was genuine but Dragnet's actors hated each other. 
CHiPs had their issues too. 
Hollywood at it's finest.
