diesel fuel
25 Jul 2008 12:07
I'm a truck driver and veteran rider.I accidently left the gas cap off in my work truck and spilled several gallons of diesel on a 15mi stretch. On the news that night i saw a rider had died on that same stretch. The reporter was standing in the lane saying there was a slick substance on the road, the rider fell changing lanes, and was ran over.i felt sick,i might have killed a man.this has bothered me for years.

hopefully people have learned something from this.i drive a service truck most of the time but still pull tractors around to jobsites once in a while and im amazed at the amount of junk people lose on the roads.you dont think about it when youre driving a truck but it could be deadly on 2 wheels,i try and drag stuff on to the side of road whenever i can

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

You can't do that to yourself, man. You have no idea if you spilled diesel fuel where he lost control, and even if you did, that may not have been the cause of it. There's oil on all roads, you can't let something like this eat you alive simply because a news reporter noticed some.
Even if it was diesel from your truck, it was a mistake, not like you hurt someone intentionally out of meaness. Feelings of guilt can destroy a person, and it sounds to me like you don't have reason enough to feel guilty. Pray about it or get some counseling if need be, but definitely get past it. Good luck to you.

I agree with rich. Its a horribly dark way to live, you cant blame yourself for this, even if you did have something to do with it. please. i have lived in that dark place. talk to someone about this and ride on.

I'm a truck driver too.Right now I'm in Portsmouth N.H..I've also been tossed down the road and have the extra stainless steel hardware for it.Do not beat yourself up over the thought that you "MIGHT HAVE" been the cause. Two to three gallon in 15 miles is nothing. It would take a good sized spill in one spot to cause an average rider to lose traction long enough to crash.

To the OP, I hope you have found your peace on this issue. I agree with Rich, pray and seek counseling and understand no one holds you to blame.

Everyone has given you good advice....and the best of it...is Pray. We dont ever want to say this...but all of us have had our near misses. when it's your time, it's your time, and no one can stop Gods will. So dont do that to yourself.

Thanks guys.I'm not freaking out anymore, but i did for a month or so.I ride daily, this was a learning exp for me.
My friends and i all slowed it down.We were out of control, every other mile we were racing eachother.ALL of my group has laid their bikes down...leaves,sand,squirrels.
