Valve Adjustment Double Check
25 Feb 2023 11:49 - 25 Feb 2023 11:53
I am working on my '82 KZ1000j that has an issue where the #1 cylinder is not firing (exhaust header not getting hot like the others). I have checked about everything else so I'm looking at the valves. I have measured the space and all valves are the same. .127mm will go in the .152mm will not. The manual says they should be between 0.05 and 0.15 mm.
Looks like I'm within specs on the high side. Am I reading everything right? Is it better to be at .05 or be at .15?

Only slightly related: For my last valve adjustment I finally bought a set of feeler gauges that is a metric set with the smaller, odd numbers in the Imperial system. Since the shims are marked using the metric system it only makes sense. Suddenly, even with the stereo playing, I could instantly determine shim size in my head. No math conversion. Best thing I ever did.

You boys in the USA are sticklers for your imperial measurements
mind you, off the back of Brexit
some knob in the UK is trying to bring back imperial measurements after over 50 years. Most people younger than that don't know what an inch is

Re: Valve Adjustment Double Check
27 Feb 2023 04:45Somehow I doubt that in 1,000 years they will be saying that. But I am guessing they won't know what the heck an inch or a mile is. I grew up at the end of the British measurement system in Canada, so I learned to use either system equally badly! Weights were my downfall....pounds vs slugs.Give him 2.54 centimeters and he will take 1,609 meters!

Re: Valve Adjustment Double Check

I always force myself to think "in metric" on the Japanese bikes and "in standard" for my Fords. What drives me crazy is ordering parts for my British sports car and they come in metric. So, I have to adjust valves with a 1/2 and a 12mm wrench. And don't get me started on my mid-80's Ranger with a mix of both from the factory!
