well by look of head you ae going to have bearing bore honed.

Thanks, I'm in Latin America, the new mikuni rs34 carbs just arrived after 20 days of waiting and many taxes and this happens.

Looks like the left bearing was put in wrong. The locator tab is flattened.

He is saying that you probably have some cylinder head work in your future to repair the cam bore and journals.


We just installed RS 34 carbs on my 77' KZ 1000LTD But haven't been able to ride it but about 25 miles so far. But they are working great so far. Once you get the head damage sorted out you'll be happy with the RS 34's. We already have put a set on our 80' Suzuki GS 1100E we're really happy with those. We're also thinking about getting a set for the 83' CB 1100F.

Using grease in a low pressure/high flow oil lubricating system is not the best idea! Look at your lower cam journal, cam bearing oil port is clogged!

That does appear to have picked up dry either side of the oil feed drilling.
As Scirocco states you shouldn't use grease on the bearings, it's likely to have plugged the oil feed and whilst the grease plug has lubed the center strip the bearing has run dry either side where the grease is too thick to spread.
Either a light smear of assembly compound such as Graphogen or just a coating of the same engine oil you are using is all that's needed and a few spins on the starter with the plugs out to prime the pump and circulate the oil is the way to go.
Doing that with the cam cover off will give visual confimation that oil is reaching all the cam journals.

He added a photo of the grease he used, but the engine only started for 3 seconds, maybe 2, I think there was no time for the oil to rise (can it fail so quickly?).
The rest of the bearings are perfect (the old ones)
The grease is very fine and it dissolves with the oil very easily, I'm going to clean it anyway but I think those new bearings are a disaster.

The issue is that as soon as the bearing turns a small amount it blocks the oil feed so will fail quickly. Were the back of the bearings totally dry as they should be ? once you have it back together it would be best to remove the spark plugs and spin on the starter until the oil is up to the top end before actually "starting" IMHO

The bearings were welded to the camshaft, I had to pry to remove.
