The line from the switch port is from the oil pump to the cooler, the other line returns oil from the cooler to the cylinder head.

Hello. The themostat yes i need it.
The oil cooler not really . But it will preserve the engine for longevity of the parts.

Do you mean thermostat or do you mean temp guage?
If you put a thermostat in the oil feed line surely the head will be starved of oil until the gearbox oil temp reaches high enough for the thermostat to open and allow flow or am I misunderstanding something.?

The oil cooler thermostat valve divided, bypass and resticted the oil flow in two diffrent oil feeding circles like on water cooled engines.
So a oil cooler is a must have or you cut off the oil flow on a hot engine!

If you don't need a cooler you don't need a thermostat and if you are in a mostly hot climate you can run the cooler without a thermostat.

The thermostat simply takes the cooler out of the circuit until it is needed, you still get full flow to the head but a small amount is diverted through the cooler to avoid " cold shocking" the system when the thermostat opens (same as a coolant thermostat on a water cooled motor which takes the radiator out of circuit until operating temp is reached)

Surely if the need for a cooler is borderline (like here in the UK where we get one hot week a year !) then it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it ? At least with a thermostat you aren't "over cooling" and if it's required it will take care of itself.
