I have a 21 mm dia circlip that was in one of my bags and I have no idea where it came from. There are 2 identical circlips in the bag containing the kick starter items. It seems to have been in with the oil pump bag but I think it was put in there by mistake
The motor has been vapour blasted and looks nice.

Member Gazzz (Nazar) from Ukraine did a full bike and engine resto mod.
He made the most detailed pic heavy documentation of any single 650 bike/engine parts.
It´s really whorth to take a look of his wrenching skills.....

If you assemble "step by step" following the factory manual you will most likely find a home for it

If still unsure, try the diagrams at kawasaki or partzilla. circlips are easy to spot in the drawings and the sizes are often noted. gear change.kickstarter. gen/starter motor. secondary shaft. maybe a couple others. There is already a circlip on the secondary shaft

Thanks, I have been doing that and could not find any shaft 22mm dia in any of the views. I have been working off a 1981 KZ650 workshop manual as my 1979 book has not arrived yet. I don't think that they vary that much except for the carbs having to have an accelerator pump and the emission control on the cam cover. I removed the secondary shaft to check that I fitted the circlip to the starter motor clutch and I had. Reinstalled the secondary shaft while listing to some really nice BB King blues music only to find that I didn't fit the primary chain, I am 74 and the memory is fading a bit. I now consider myself well qualified at fitting and removing said secondary shaft. The only other 22mm circlips I have found are on the kickstart assembley. I will check everything sgain when 79 WSM arrives, thanks all for the help.

Thanks for all the suggestions, problem now solved. I must have put the 3rd circlip from the kickstart bag into the secondary shaft bag. The kickstarter has two 20mm and one 19mm circlips. When I put the transmission into place and the kickstarte all assembled and in place I found that one of the
screw/bolts that hold the starter in place was contacting the gear which the starter actually operates. It was protruding too far into the crankcase.
The two screws holding the plate are the same as before so the gear is not sitting in it's origional position. I am only talking about 1 or 2 thou but enough to make contact. I ended up by cutting about 5 mm off the screw so it is now flush with the crankcase.
