KZ305 Cam Shaft Seal Leaking

Hi All,

I degreased the bike and find that oil is leaking out of the lower part of the cam shaft seal. Pics attached.

Is this something I can do myself without pulling the head off?
If not would it be worth a try to apply permatex around the outside of the seal where it is leaking?
I asked AI how to do it step by step, results below do you agree? I do not see a big hex cap anywhere...KZ 305 Cam Oil Seal is leaking A.I. search says: New cam oil sealStep-by-Step Instructions:
  1. Locate the cam oil seal: The cam oil seal is usually located on the side of the engine, near the camshaft. It's a small, cylindrical seal that prevents oil from leaking out of the engine.
  2. Remove the big hex head cap: Loosen the big hex head cap on the side of the tensioner to take the spring pressure off of the tensioner. This will allow you to access the cam oil seal.
  3. Remove the two mounting bolts: Remove the two mounting bolts that hold the tensioner in place. This will give you clearance to remove the cam oil seal.
  4. Remove the old cam oil seal: Use a punch or pliers to carefully remove the old cam oil seal from its housing. Be careful not to damage the surrounding area.
  5. Clean the area: Clean the area around the cam oil seal housing to ensure a proper seal.
  6. Apply non-hardening gasket sealer or grease: Apply a light coat of non-hardening gasket sealer or grease to the gasket area to ensure a proper seal.
  7. Install the new cam oil seal: Install the new cam oil seal into its housing, making sure it's properly seated.
  8. Reassemble the tensioner: Reassemble the tensioner in the reverse order of how you disassembled it. Make sure to tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque value.
  9. Replace the big hex head cap: Replace the big hex head cap on the side of the tensioner and tighten it to the specified torque value.

Rather than asking AI, which is just as likely to give you fiction as truth, why not ask Kawasaki?

As Texas said, look at the FSM, you are already into to where you need to be and replacing a seal isn't difficult (if done correctly) plastering sealant over it won't help for long

I had the service manual, thanks for posting the link anyway, I didn't know those files were there.

I'd like to say the service manual makes it all crystal clear for me but it does not. I am new at this.

My main question remains can I pull and replace the cam seal without pulling off the head. And on page 46 it says:
Caution:
If the camshaft oil seal is installed prior to the cylinder head cover installation,
or if the oil seal is incorrectly installed,
it could cause oil leakage of timer advancer binding.

This leads me to believe it can be installed without removing the head. But I was hoping someone else here had done this before and could chime in.
The other thing confusing me is there is no "timing advancer", I pull off the outer cover and what you see is what I posted in the previous pictures. Maybe because mine is an 87 KZ305-B2.

Simple answer is this type of seal is always fitted after casings are assembled

Thanks, should be interesting pulling the old one off and making/finding  a makeshift tool to press the new one on, maybe a large socket.

You can carefully screw a "self tapping" screw into both sides of the seal from the face and pull out with pliers or vice grips, a socket will work to tap in the new seal although looking at the length of the shaft you will probably need a piece of pipe the right diameter to slide over the shaft

I have had success using drywall screws to get seals out. Use the old seal as a cushion between the new seal and the pipe/socket when driving in the new seal.

I have not tried on that particular seal, but with smaller ones I have had good luck removing them with a hooked pick. A short bit of pvc  pipe the proper diameter should make a good installation tool.
