Timing an 81 KZ1100a

1981 KZ 1100a1) I've Put the cams in a few times now. Every time, the marks refuse to settle into the rite spot. I have been keeping the chain tight through out the process. But if I have the cams rite, the timing advance is off the mark. What am I doing wrong? Or is that fixed at the timing advance plate?

Are you sure you counted the proper number of cam chain pins? Did you start counting at the first pin above the mark?

I started at 0 to 44 the alignment for the cams is good relative to the intake and the exhaust and the case  . but the timing advance plate is about 1 degree retarded.

Based on your photos I think both cam sprockets need to be reset one pin forward.

😏

This is the best time to clean and lubricate the advance mechanism.

The rust is locking the timing advancer movement, a good clean and some lube should help.
Your cams, sprockes and cam chain have rusty spots and are un-lubed also.....
Don´t forget to reset the cam chain tensioner before you put and tighten the cam cover.
The cam chain slider in the cover give some extra teniton to the chain!!!
You can easy crack the cover!!!
