Absolutely make sure the tensioner is correctly tensioned. I missed that somehow once after putting the top end back together. I made it 20 or thirty miles. Chewed up pieces of chain tensioner shoe all through the bottom end. Had to split the cases and replace all the bearings.

I finally got some time to go through a few checks. First problem was the bike would not start again but I found a wire problem by the kill switch so it is starting very well but sounds terrible. I have found that the exhaust pipes 1,2 and 4 are getting warm. Number 3 is stone cold so there is an issue with only running on 3 cylinders. I suppose it could be a Number of reasons for the number 3 not firing as the other pistons.

Given the issue you had with the chain skipping when you rotated the motor I would suggest a compression and leakage test before you get too involved (you may have bent a valve or two :()

Thanks for advise Wookie. I got round to doing the compression test today. No 1 - 165, No 2  - 175, No 3 - 165 and No 4 - 170.
They all seem fairly consistent on all four. Would you still need a leakage test to check the valves are ok. I dont have a kit to do the test so would have to buy one.

With those compression readings you are good to go (would be significantly lower with a bent valve), don't worry about buying a leak tester at this stage (you can always buy one at a later date to have to hand if needed)
