One thing 900's did NOT have is a weak engine.  Cranks were bullet proof.  Trannys too.  Those engines were some of the best every made.  The proof for the 900 is the number of records they captured back in the day.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

If you do the numbers they hit the 20,000 mark by mid July of 1973, if every bike after the 20,000 mark is a Z1A then maybe July to June is the manufacturing year?

At the Kawasaki Factory in Lincoln NE the manufacture of the next Model Year machines would begin in July after our 2 week summer shutdown, I would assume this practice came from Japan.  Manufacture Year and  Model Year are definitely not the same.  There were sometimes running changes during a Model Year,  which were noted by VIN# and date.   I have tried with no success up to this point to access Engineering/Production Records from the seventies,  it appears they were not digitized ,  a real shame if all the paper copies went to the shredder.
