Petcock still leaks

I rebuilt the petcock on my 1980 KZ1000 LTD, but it still leaks. It doesn't let fuel out where it shouldn't come out, but it doesn't stop when you turn it to off. Even though the leak is slow, it's still enough to fill the carbs and drip through the overflows when it's been sitting a while. I had the tank off sitting on the floor (on cardboard) for about a week, and when I came back, the cardboard had a big fuel stain on it.

Is there a replacement I can get for my screw on petcock? It's non-vacuum dual output. Someone suggested a pingel valve, but I don't know if those have a reserve function or not... and I need that.

I said someone already mentioned that to me. Do they have a reserve function at all?

This one is a bit expensive but will solve your problem.

I'm pretty sure that most if not all the Pingel style petcocks have a reserve function.

Z1 has a nice page on the subject...

You might need an adapter plate (check the above link for info), but there are definitely cheaper non-vacuum petcocks with the reserve function.

example

My petcock is also slightly leaky after a rebuild. I refuse to give up the vacuum functionity, though...

Many folks say "Pingel". I can't figure out what makes a Pingel worth paying twice as much, unless you need really high flow...

Great links Chet and great price on the Z1 petcocks. Plus Jeff will help select the correct fittings. I just used the oldbikebarn link as an example - beware their return policy if there'e a problem.

That "example" petcock is really nice, and a bargin for only $15. If it were dual outlet, I would buy that without hesitation.

Can you use a single outlet and put a Y junction in the line ?
Would that setup flow enough gas ?

GRRRRR.... You guys didn't read Jeff's page through to the bottom!

;)

'tis okay. I should have pasted it. Jeff, I hope you don't mind me copying your content. :silly:

Jeff saith:

If your carbs have dual fuel hose feeds, you can use a Y or T 'splitter' to feed both sides. Fuel flow through the aftermarket single outlet petcocks IS sufficient to put a Y or T 'splitter' in the hose on all but the radical larger cc motorcycles (many stock 1000cc motorcycles use only one fuel feed to supply all four carbs)

Tell you what, Alex. If you buy the $15 one, try feeding your carbs with a Y, and aren't happy with the results, PM me and I'll buy it off of you for my SR for whatever Jeff charged you plus a few bucks shipping.

Just know that you may need an adapter plate, but this one fits the same places a Pingel fits, so if you need an adapter plate for this petcock you'll need one for the Pingel as well.

my petcock leaks as well...'84 KZ700. I looked at the pingel petcocks at z1 but it doesn't look like the hole in the tank is large enough for the petcock filter...like I would have to drill out the tank.

Is this true? I can get a new OEM petcock for $56.
