Odd question regarding alt and ign covers
19 Oct 2020 17:43
I have a Australian delivered 11/78 z650, I assume the late month on the tag actually means it is MY79.
I really dislike the lower case Kawasaki emblem on the covers and was wondering if there are any covers I can use that will accept my stator and have the upper case logo.
Any help or info will be much appreciated.

I'm not sure about the alternator cover. I think you would have to swap to a 1977 charging system to use the 1977 cover, or modify something at the very least.
The ignition cover from an earlier 650 should bolt right on.
What about the gas tank?

Thanks loudhvx, I was hoping you would answer, it seems some later covers have the upper case logo without the 3 screws but have 2 wire stators unlike mine,
I need to find out the inside ID of a 2 wire stator to compare to mine to see if it is possible, I'll keep researching.
My tank has upper case badges.
Thanks Nessism, yes I may have to have them machined off.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThere was a KZ650 alternator/generator cover of similar to early model design and with letters in uppercase but without holes for stator. Here are couple of them:
Breaker cover with letters in uppercase does exist, but it seems to be as rare as unicorn.

I found only one for sale and it's dented:

Another option is Kawasaki Zephyr 750 covers: they are equipped with removable badges, thus you could make custom badges instead of original. Same is situation with GPZ750 covers.

Thanks gazzz, I just went out to the shed to look at my alt cover and I think the first one you posted would probably work with my stator, the casting looks to be identical, enough for me to take a punt on I think. I will search to see if I can find one in a bit better nick than the one you posted and see how it goes.
Ha, I thought the ignition cover was going to be the easy bit!
I will go to cmsnl if I can't find suitable second hand ones.
Thanks again Gazzz.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThe 83 650-CSR engine covers are similar to the Zephyr. and a few other models had the same covers. see cross-reference at Partzilla.

The use of capital letters on the alternator cover was used on the 77 and 78 models, in 79 and later they were not . I have not done so but think you could use one from 78 with your current system. I have attached a couple of pics showing the outside and inside of the covers. Hope they help.
