Battery

Hi, my battery is dead on my 1981 Kawasaki z750. I'm looking to renew it but wasn't sure which battery to go for. The current one is YB12A-A, 
my question is can I go for a higher ah and cranking voltage? 
Do I need to stick to the same battery or can I get any as long as it fits my battery tray?

No need for extra power as long as the electrical system is functioning normally.

I prefer an AGM battery. I have had really good luck with the made in Japan Yuasa and the Interstate brands.

As a rule of thumb, you get the highest CCA (cold cranking amps) you can fit in the space available (they tend to be bigger physically)     This goes for any vehicle. 

Higher cranking amps  batteries don't give you more power, THEY GIVE YOU MORE CAPACITY,....meaning more cranking time ...if ever a problem...and longer life as they simply have more capacity for same job. 

Before you chuck your old Yuasa measure the dimensions write them down and compare to suggested replacements before you buy. Some battery manufactuters will say their product is direct replacement  for the YB12A-A but with slightly larger dimensions and wont fit the space

The Yuasa website has the dimensions, but you probably need to stay w the 12A-A which is what mine is.  There isn't much wiggle room in my battery box. When going with an alternative battery, make darn sure the terminals aren't reversed or oriented differently. tends to happen from time to time on the various mc forums, sometimes w a guy connecting things backwards.

The answer to your question is no.  You don't have to stick with 12 amp hrs if a larger capacity battery fits.  But if you wish to go with LiPo you should check to see if your charging system provides at least 14.4 and no more than 14.8 volts to the battery.  This is the range at which they charge.

I can't seem to find an exact replacement for my current battery. Retailers list and sell alternatives but as JR says none of them fit my battery box, battery too wide or too short and fall inside. I'll keep trying trying.

Early this year I replaced a Yuasa 12A-A  -which had lasted less than a year - with  a Motobatt AGM MB12U.  15AH and 160CCA. The dimensions are identical to the Yuasa  12A-A  and the battery can be placed with + and - post either way around.
Hoping it lasts a few years. I think Nessism reccomended it. So far so good

Hips  says "z"750  so if outside Nth America availability may be an issue.
